Top Tips

1. Ask friends and families to prepare dinners for up to two weeks after baby?s arrival. This is a great help for new parents, with a new addition in the house it?s one less thing to worry about!

2. If you are planning to breast feed your baby, its great to go to a breast feeding support group. You will get a chance to meet other breast feeding mums. I felt it really helped me when it came to breast feeding. Sandra, Tipp , Mum of one Check out our links page for La Leche League breast feeding support groups.

3. Always have a changing bag prepared and ready to go, have nappies, wipes and change of clothes. You can put in your bottles just before you are ready to go.

4. If you plan to bottle feed invest in a powder dispenser, these really come in handy especially at night. Put the required amount of powder in the dispenser (I had one with three compartments and filled them all on a nightly basis). At night bring your cooled boiled water and prepared milk powder to your room, when baby wakes, there is no need to even turn on the light! Just mix and go.

5. Always have a few nappies, wipes and nappy bags both upstairs and downstairs. When baby needs to be changed there is no need to be running up and down 15 stairs!

6. If your baby has a favourite toy, teddy or comforter that they just love, get another two and alternate them. Children can get very attached to their favourite toy and for it to be lost would be devastating. Top Tip for mum have a back up plan!

7. Make sure you make time for Mum. As any mum will tell you, whether you work in the home or not, being a mum is a tough job. Set aside some time (no matter how small) each day for "mom time", whether it is taking a relaxing bath or reading just one chapter in a book. Mom time is very important.

8. RELAX: know this is the one you hear most...but it really is the best advice. Try to RELAX with your new baby and enjoy all you do incl feeding, winding, bathing, cuddling! Try to put off any housework NOT NEEDED! As the saying goes "it will be there after you've gone" ! ENOY YOUR NEWBORN! Denise (mother of 10year old, 6 year old and 8 week old).
